PREEM SHOOTS FROM LIP

Experts might sneer but public will agree with Ford on home invasion

Premier Doug Ford says a homeowner in Vaughan should have shot the men who invaded his home a few more times.

Ford was reacting to the latest home invasion story in the GTA during a news conference last Wednesday.

Ford went far beyond what most politicians would say in endorsing the homeowner, a legal and licensed gun owner who fired and hit one of the men.

Welcome to the March 2026 issue of MB Business Magazine

There is a specific kind of bravery required to look at a stable, predictable career path and say, “No, I think I’ll build my own.” We call it entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship is a polished term, but behind the word is a lot of unpolished grit. It means late nights stressed over budgets, a silent panic from a postponed delivery, and the sheer persistence required to turn a “NO” into a “YES.” So this month we are here to walk you through all the happy, overnight success highlight reels and talk about what it really means to start (and then grow) a business in Canada these days.

If you have ever sought to raise money, you know it is not a straight line; it is an obstacle course. That’s why we are dedicating our leading piece to the “funding maze.” Here, we explain how Canadian startups can actually find the grants and venture capital needed to make it through those leap-of-faith early days. But you can’t build a solid foundation on money alone. We also explore the details of running an organization. As you will see in this issue, the mere act of laying the groundwork for communication, making sure your newest hire and top executive are really, literally hearing one another, is something that growing companies trying to keep up in a fast-changing market keep tripping themselves up over.

What most struck me as I was compiling this issue, though, was the sheer range of today’s founders. We are experiencing a profound economic shift towards micro-enterprises and home-based businesses that are reshaping our communities, slowly but solidly. And the narratives from women and newcomer entrepreneurs we have featured are simply a masterclass in grit. They are overcoming systemic and unique challenges to do this and yet they are bringing innovation and new viewpoints to the Canadian market that we so badly need.

From whiteboard business plans jotted down on coffee shop napkins to tightly-knit teams to your daily just need a spark of inspiration to keep going, these pages are for you.

Grab a coffee, take a quick break from the grind and dive in.
