HORWATH AND DEL DUCA DIDN’T DO WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO

Ontario’s opposition leaders needed to find a way to show that they were the ones ready to replace Doug Ford as premier. Ultimately NDP leader Andrea Horwath, Liberal leader Steven Del Duca and Green leader Mike Schreiner failed to show that they’re ready to lead the next government.

Ford was the punching bag for the other party leaders throughout the debate no matter what the issue. On the pandemic, on education and on healthcare, the united opposition parties said that Ford failed to deliver.

Early on, during a face to face portion on affordability between Ford and Del Duca, Ford forced Del Duca to admit, despite all his criticisms that the PC government was making life unaffordable, that a Liberal government would not repeal the gas tax relief coming July 1, would not bring back fees for licence plate stickers and would not bring back tolls on Highways 412 and 418 which the Liberals built, under Del Duca, with expensive tolls.

Claiming your opponent is making life more expensive and then agreeing that you’ll keep all his cost cutting measures wasn’t a good look for Del Duca.

Overall, the Liberal leader performed well during the debate but he didn’t do anything to make himself stand out from the crowd. He had some good moments on education at times but then lied about the Ford government bringing in private hospitals – illegal in Ontario for decades – even though he knew better.

He even claimed that Ford only showed up 18% of the time for Question Period, a figure that didn’t sit right with someone paid to watch. Seems that Del Duca’s team timed Ford and claimed that when he left after the leaders round of questions in 2021 and 2022, he wasn’t showing up to work even though he was dealing with a pandemic.

It’s not unusual for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to leave on many days after the leaders round, I doubt the Del Duca’s Liberals would count in the same way.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath, fighting to keep her job as official opposition leader performed well for the leader of the opposition but, like Del Duca, didn’t look like someone standing in the wings as the premier in waiting. She stuck to her talking points, reiterated the claims she has made on the campaign trail but didn’t have a break out moment.

At one point, Horwath looked directly into the camera and said she wouldn’t raise taxes.

Her own platform details the income tax increases, the capital gains tax increases and the increase from a new carbon tax, dubbed a cap and trade system, that she will bring in. In the current fiscal year, the NDP platform promises $6.7 billion in new taxes with $9.1 billion next year and $9.8 billion the following year.

At one point, when Ford pointed out that construction unions were backing him and abandoning her, she laughed uncomfortably.

Ford was cool, calm and collected and yet, despite the claim that he was the only one unable to address the public without notes, both Horwath and Schreiner also had notes with them. Del Duca may think he’s morally superior to Ford for being able to stand toe to toe with other leaders without notes, but most voters couldn’t. Public speaking terrifies most people and mocking those who need assistance diminishes those doing the mocking rather than those being mocked.

In the calculation of who won and who lost, Ford just didn’t need to lose last Monday but very well may have won. The opposition needed to find a way to break away from each other like a race horse down the final stretch and they didn’t.

Unless Horwath or Del Duca find something soon, this remains a race for second with Ford well out in front.
